High Quality OAA and Real Outdoor Learning

Why Outdoor Learning?

Outdoor learning provides countless opportunities for experiential, contextual and applied education.

Taking the curriculum outdoors can increase engagement, improve attainment and develop problem solving, team work and communication skills as well as providing learners with resilience and grit to cope with everyday life.

The Outdoor Learning School

Our sessions help children to cope with ‘everyday risk’, taking full advantage of the freedom of childhood and exploring the world around them.

Ofsted warned schools of the over zealous health and safety policies denying children the chance to develop ‘resilience and grit’.

How can we help?

The Outdoor Learning School aims to promote REAL outdoor learning in school as a means to connect children with the environment and to develop teachers’ skills and knowledge when delivering in the outdoor classroom.

The Outdoor Learning School also runs high quality CPD and INSET training for teachers, youth workers and other staff working with young people.

We have developed a range of courses to help staff feel more confident about developing Outdoor Learning activities in a wide range of environments. We also help staff to develop specific skills and good practice relating to outdoor learning within schools.

Projects have included: Delivering an outdoor learning session including outdoor cooking incorporating where food comes from and a healthy lifestyle; CPD and workshops for teachers on delivering outdoor learning; team building days for staff; developing school grounds; outdoor learning conferences; end of year adventures for pupils; environmental Science activities; residential camps; and INSET training.

Testimonials

“My children were bouncing around impatiently taking it in turns to tell me everything they did - blindfolded assault course, exploring the pond and roasting marshmallows on their own campfire. Even now a week later my daughter will stop me and explain how to light a campfire with very detailed descriptions! Clearly very special memories for them both.”

— Parent

“Quite simply they remember it and that really helps put lessons in to contexts. Plus there is always 100% attendance when we are learning outdoors. ”

— Teacher

“I love what you're doing and I want us to do more!”
